Overview

About 80 percent of Americans live in urban areas. Among the public issues they deal with are health, community development, natural resources and the environment, and workforce development. CSREES works to increase awareness of the need for Cooperative Extension Service programs in urban areas and provides funding for them.

In Focus

• The Cooperative Extension System is among many groups with Web information for hurricane survivors, relief workers and potential donors to the relief effort.
• The Garden Mosaics Project provides an informal education model for community gardens in which youth, educators, and adult gardeners explore science principles.
• We Grow People--Profiles of Extension Educators is a research study of New York City urban extension educators and how they do their jobs.
• The NACo Extension Fellow Program connects CSREES with the National Assocation of Counties and helps foster integration between rural and urban programs.

Partnerships

• CSREES works with the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges' Commission on the Urban Agenda.
• CSREES partners with the National Association of Conservation Districts' Urban, Community, and Coastal Resources Committee and other groups on urban issues.
• The National Association of Counties, CSREES, and the Land-Grant University System partner in a fellowship program.

Selected Results and Impacts

• A CSREES-funded study examined growth management and farmland retention in Ohio and elsewhere to determine effectiveness and impacts of land use policies.
• Supported by funding from CSREES, scientists in California are examining the relationship between diversity and stability in urban forests.
• A CSREES-funded study focuses on developing an understanding of the reproductive biology of Pacific herring in the San Francisco Bay estuary.
