What is RSS? |

Increasing human population and resulting consumption are placing extreme pressures on our natural resources and the environment. We rely on these resources to grow food, make a living, and keep our air and water clean. Future generations may be at risk of losing this vast source of economic security, quality of life, and environmental stability if we don't find ways to develop in a more sustainable manner. CSREES aims to incorporate sustainability concepts and principles into the policies, practices, and programs of the Land-Grant University System so that everyone may benefit from sound sustainable development in the United States.

• CSREES Administrator Hefferan delivers sustainable development keynote address at United Nations Economic Commission for Europe implementation meeting.
• CSREES leadership developed the education program for the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign.
• CSREES' Green Team supports Federal Sustainability Executive Order.
• Sustainable living educators are developing a national network to unify programming and provide educational tools for natural resources professionals.
• CSREES coordinates USDA participation in the WSSD Partnership My Community, Our Earth, led by the U.S. Department of State.
• The CSREES Science for Sustainability Working Group is made up of national program staff who integrate sustainability concepts into their programs.

Partnerships

• White Water to Blue Water (WW2BW) is a partnership linked to CSREES through MyCOE and addresses integrated watershed and marine issues in the Caribbean.
• CSREES is an active partner in the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign, an effort to protect North American pollinating animals.
• My Community, Our Earth (MyCOE): Geographic Learning for Sustainable Development is a partnership among CSREES and other government agencies aimed at youth.

Selected Results and Impacts

• Using a CSREES grant, North Carolina researchers are working to improve understanding of how conservation benefits watersheds.
• North Carolina's Farmland Values Project uses CSREES funds to explore the non-farm values of agricultural land.
• Funded by the CSREES National Research Initiative, Oregon researchers developed a new glue made from renewable natural resources.
