[PARTNERSHIP]NIFA/USDA partner with the National Physical Activity Plan to implement local plans

The National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is a member of the USDA partnership with the U.S. National Physical Activity Plan. The U.S. National Physical Activity Plan, released May 3, 2010, is a comprehensive set of policies, programs, and initiatives that aims to increase physical activity in all segments of the American population. The plan is the product of a private-public sector collaborative. Hundreds of organizations are working together to change the nation’s communities in ways that will enable every American to be sufficiently physically active.
The plan, organized around eight societal sectors, focuses on initiatives that aim to increase physical activity. Its ultimate goal is to improve health, prevent disease and disability, and enhance quality of life. This goal aligns closely with the NIFA strategic objective, “To Improve the Nation’s Nutrition and Health.”
The USDA partnership includes NIFA, the Food and Nutrition Service , the Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, and the Forest Service . Each of these USDA agencies brings unique expertise and resources with the common goal of increasing physical activity and improving the health of Americans. In particular, NIFA promotes the physical activity of individuals and their families through education, research, and outreach. Through these efforts, NIFA, working with its land-grant universities and the Cooperative Extension System, can effectively contribute to the plan’s recommendations in one or more of the eight societal sectors:
•	Business and Industry
•	Education
•	Health Care
•	Mass Media
•	Parks, Recreation, and Fitness and Sports
•	Public Health
•	Transportation, Land Use, and Community Design
•	Volunteer and Nonprofit

[EVENT] NCHS National Conference on Health Statistics, August 16-18, 2010

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)—an agency of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)—is pleased to invite you to attend its 2010 National Conference on Health Statistics. The conference will be held Monday through Wednesday, August 16–18, 2010, at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Past NCHS conferences have offered workshop sessions describing the agency’s activities in data collection, analysis, and dissemination. This year, we’re excited to host a conference that will draw on research topics affecting health-related activities today and will serve as a forum for addressing future health topics. The new conference format has been designed to attract the most knowledgeable and influential professionals in the area of health statistics. Thomas R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., Director of CDC, Robert Groves, Ph.D., Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, and Michael Wolfson, Ph.D., Assistant Chief Statistician (recently retired) of Statistics Canada, will address the conference, along with many other esteemed speakers. The 3-day event is shaping up to secure NCHS’s position as a premiere statistical and government agency.

This year also promises to be particularly exciting because NCHS will be celebrating 50 years as a statistical agency. We’re planning a number of activities that highlight and celebrate our accomplishments over the past 50 years.

NCHS staff—knowledgeable in all areas of program infrastructure—will provide overviews of each of the Center’s surveys and other major data collection systems and will discuss in-depth the analyses of the collected data. As at past NCHS conferences, we will offer computer classrooms for hands-on data manipulation. An entire day is being devoted to these applied learning sessions, along with several educational workshops.

[PARTNERSHIP] Steps to a HealthierUS

Steps to a HealthierUS

CSREES recently established a cooperative partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to conduct complementary programs and activities in Steps-funded communities served by the Cooperative Extension System (CES). The Steps to a HealthierUS initiative advances the HealthierUS goal of helping Americans live longer, better, and healthier lives. Through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Steps initiative operates a cooperative agreement program office (Steps Program) that provides funding to support evidence-based community interventions in 40 communities nationwide. The programs focus on reducing the burden of diabetes, obesity and asthma and address three related risk behaviors—physical inactivity, poor nutrition, and tobacco use. Steps program emphasis, along with its partnerships and community presence, closely aligns with the CSREES strategic goal to improve the nation's nutrition and health. The CSREES/CES partnership, with Step Program funding, results in many services and programs that benefit local and rural communities. The Steps Program aims to adopt some of USDA's promising educational activities and work with CSREES to replicate model programs in Steps-funded communities. The cooperative partnership also provides an opportunity for CES to work closely with Steps communities, providing subject expertise and educational materials. Additionally, both entities will explore opportunities to collaborate on future evaluation activities.

[In Focus] Nutrition and Exercise Science Programs at the Land-Grant Universities: Assessment

Nutrition and Exercise Science Programs at the Land-Grant Universities: Assessment

This is an exciting time for the academic and professional fields related to health, nutrition, and exercise science. Better understanding of the benefits of a healthy lifestyle, coupled with nationwide attention on such health problems as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and osteoarthritis present many opportunities and challenges to university campuses. To meet these challenges, many of the land-grant universities will need to change, modify, or enhance existing nutrition programs to include an exercise science emphasis or option as well as health education and health promotion program areas. An assessment of the number and types of nutrition and exercise programs currently in place at the undergraduate and graduate levels benchmarks successful programs from a national perspective. A summary report and program guidance is available and should be of interest to nutrition department chairs, family and consumer science program directors, and faculty in nutrient, kinesiology, and related fields.
