CSREES Farm Safety Program

Farming is a hazardous profession. While the total number of agricultural fatalities has been decreasing in recent years, 285 farmers and ranchers were killed on the job in 2007 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. CSREES addresses the issue of farm safety by supporting Cooperative Extension Service programs that train workers in appropriate field practices and equipment use and maintenance CSREES also supports the AgrAbility program, which reached 2,287 new disabled farmers and ranchers through education, assistance, and networking from 2004-2008 with on-farm assessments and assistive technology implementation on their worksites.

Vermont AgrAbility Project/Online resource for farmers with disabilities and illness

The Vermont AgrAbility Project, in conjunction with University of Vermont Extension staff and USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA), have partnered to create Farm Safe VT, an online resource for farmers with illnesses or disabilities. The Vermont AgrAbility Project staff manages the blog, which fields inquiries about the AgrAbility project and educates the public about the mission of AgrAbility. The blog incorporates staff information, general health and safety tips, Vermont AgrAbility client success stories, and updates from NIFA. Back to Farm Safety
