What is RSS? |

According to the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control, in 2003-2004, an estimated 66 percent of U.S. adults were overweight or obese, along with 17 percent of children and adolescents. The total annual cost of obesity was an estimated $117 billion in 2000. CSREES works with its land-grant university partners on research, education, and extension projects in areas related to obesity. These areas include: identifying nutritional needs; developing new foods to help achieve caloric balance; providing nutrition education; conducting behavioral research; and planning, conducting, and evaluating dietary interventions.

In Focus

• The National Food and Society Roundtable on Obesity and Youth identified childhood obesity prevention strategies for Land-Grant University System and USDA.
• Research on obesity causes and prevention focuses on the entire food system, from production to consumption.
• The Pennington Biomedical Research Center at Louisiana State University focuses research efforts on obesity.
• Reversing Childhood Obesity Trends: Helping Children Achieve Healthy Weights is a joint CSREES and Land-Grant University System project.
• The Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) is a CSREES-funded program that helps limited resource audiences make healthful dietary changes.
• Multistate research projects allow institutions to pool resources to conduct research, education, and extension activities focused on obesity topics.

Partnerships

• CSREES partners with Steps for a HealthierUS an initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help Americans live healthier lives.
• CSREES participates on the USDA Human Nutrition Coordinating Committee with other USDA and HHS agencies on related-nutrition programs.
• Through the Fruits & Veggies: More Matters program, CSREES is working with its partners promoting increased consumption of fruits and vegetables.
