4-H and Community Readiness Comes Together in Glynn County, GA
Georgia 4-H members in Glynn County are working on several projects to better prepare their community in case of an emergency. Below are examples of projects the students have initiated:
- 4-H’ers created the “Community Pick-up Locations” map for residents without transportation. These maps have been given to the Health Department, Glynn County Emergency Management Agency, and were distributed at schools in September.
- 4-H’ers put together emergency information packets to hand out at the county fair. These packets contain an evacuation map, community pick-up map, county contact information, state-wide pet friendly shelters, 96-hour backpack, full preparation check list (amounts of water/person, list of baby products/formula, pet readiness, medical records, family photos, and home readiness: insurance/financial/warranty papers, store outdoor trash cans and lawn furniture, etc.).
- Students created a poster representing Glynn County at the Georgia Youth Summit, September 30, through October 2. Community readiness was part of their county profile and poster presentation.
- 4-H club meetings in September were held at the Boys and Girls Club to educate youth and adults on community readiness activities, including information on the 96-hour backpack. The adults were interviewed on evacuation procedures for the facility.
- The students are continuing their evacuation mapping project and seek to partner with two other Glynn County high school technology teams to teach Geographic Information Systems and evacuation mapping.
