Forestry Research Advisory
Council
The Forestry Research Advisory Council (FRAC)
was reauthorized in the 2002 Farm Bill for
the purpose of providing recommendations
and advice on forestry research to the Secretary
of Agriculture. FRAC consists of members
appointed by the Secretary and drawn from
federal, professional forestry, state, and
nongovernmental organizations. FRAC convenes
annually and presents recommendations to
the Secretary.
A summary of forestry research recommendations
FRAC has put forward for the last three years
includes:
- focus USDA funding, specifically Forest
Service and McIntire-Stennis research dollars,
on sustainable forest productivity, management,
social values of forests, and communication;
- continue improvement of Forest Inventory
and Analysis Program and reach targeted
funding levels;
- request an external review of the McIntire-Stennis
program to verify FRAC belief that this
is a major federal research funding success
story;
- increase research capacity by adding
the 1890 Historically Black Colleges and
Universities, 1994 Tribal Colleges and
Universities, and other minority institutions
that have forestry programs and the potential
to develop quality research and graduate
forest science programs, and;
- increase awareness and utilization of
forestry research.
