Dominican Republic Development Project, 2000-2002

USDA donated 100,000 metric tons of wheat to the Dominican Republic under a 416(b) agreement. The donated wheat was sold locally, and the proceeds were used to fund projects aimed at rehabilitating small and medium-scale farm operations. The $16 million generated by the wheat sales, combined with another $8 million provided by public and private sector agencies in the Dominican Republic, funded 33 projects.

CSREES' International Programs Office identified technical assistance providers for the Dominican Republic program. CSREES tapped expertise at U.S. universities to work with Dominican counterparts on the following efforts:

  • Cocoa production.
  • Coffee forests.
  • Livestock rehabilitation.
  • Support for small sugarcane farmers.
  • Rehabilitating centers for integrated rural agribusiness service.
  • Agroforestry rehabilitation.
