Minority-Serving Institutions
(MSIs) Against Obesity Workshop
The Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs)
Against Obesity Workshop, Bismarck, SD, August
2005, and Seminar, Washington, DC, November
2005, were co-sponsored by CSREES, United
Tribes Technical College, Southwestern Indian
Polytechnic Institute, and the University
of Connecticut. The events successfully connected
and produced new partnerships among the Land-Grant
Institutions (1994,1890, 1862/Alaska-Natives/Territories)
to submit competitive grants for CSREES Human
Nutrition and Obesity, Food Safety, Bioactive
Food Components for Optimal Health, Community
Food Systems, Improving Food Quality and
Value, and the 1890 Capacity-Building Grants
programs for the 2006 funding cycle. This
project offered the first opportunity for
some campuses to submit grants competitively.
The project’s initial goal of soliciting
5 competitive grants from the MSIs was exceeded
and now stands at 30. The Latino Health Disparities
NIH EXPORT (Partnerships for Community Outreach & Research
on Health Disparities and Training) Center
at the University of Connecticut is embracing
other MSIs through this project to collaborate
and partner on addressing health disparities
of minorities. The workshop’s co-project
directors are collaborating on a conference
grant to the CSREES National Integrated Food
Safety Initiative to continue mutual sharing
of research and information on health issues
that impact minorities.
