Walk Across Texas!

Walk Across Texas! is an 8-week walking program to help people of all ages support one another to establish the habit of regular physical activity. The program is recognized as a Best Practice Physical Activity Program by the Texas Department of State Health Services.

Why is this program important to Texans?  

  • Twenty-five percent of Texans are obese.
  • Twenty-five percent of children are obese.
  • Only 25 percent of adults and 25 percent of high school students get regular, moderate exercise.
  • Twenty-nine percent of American adults are not physically active.

 

Impact of Walk Across Texas!

  • Provides opportunity for individuals or groups to participate in regular physical activity.
  • Seventy-nine Texas counties participated in 2006.
  • More than 14,525 people registered and 1,122 people finished the 8-week program.
  • Fifty percent of participants report feeling decreased stress after participating.
  • Participants will experience reduced incidence, severity, and health care cost of chronic diseases that are linked to overweight and inactivity.
