Priester National Extension Health Conference
The Priester National Extension Health Conference, named in honor of retired CSREES National Program Leader Jeanne Priester, invites professionals involved in health research, education, and policy from the Cooperative Extension Service, health care, federal organizations and agencies, private nonprofit organizations and associations, school systems, land-grant institutions, and other institutions of higher education to attend the conference. CSREES/USDA is a conference co-sponsor.
The Priester Award honors Jeanne M. Priester and her accomplishments and contributions to the Cooperative Extension System (CES). She was a leader in advancing health education within CES during her tenure at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The purpose of the award is to honor extension programs impacting the health of people across the United States and that are providing the leadership to expand extension's capacity to effectively implement health programs. The Priester Award recognizes sound and innovative health education programs on the county, state, and national levels.
2008 National Priester Extension Health Conference
The 2008 National Priester Extension Health Conference will be held April 8-10, 2008, at the North Carolina Sheraton Imperial Hotel, Research Triangle Park, NC. This year's theme is "Building Healthy Communities, One Person at a Time.” Tracks for concurrent workshops and presentations include: successful aging, global health, and growing up healthy IRL (in real life).
2007 National Priester Extension Health Conference
The 2007 National Priester Extension Health Conference will be held April 10-12 at the Hilton Inn-Airport in Kansas City , MO. The 2007 conference theme, Extension on the Move: Advancing Health for Every Body celebrates Extension's long history of involvement in promoting health and preventing disease across the life span. 2006 National Priester Extension Health Conference
The 2006 National Priester Health Conference was held April 24-27 in Louisville , KY. The theme, “The Race is On: Translating Research into Policy and Practice for Healthier Communities,” addressed a vast array of public health issues. A pre-conference session addressed youth substance abuse with a focus on methamphetamine abuse, which is a serious issue in farm and rural communities. Keynote presenters included Marc Mannes, of the Search Institute; Ron Mullins, of the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children; Andrew A. Sorenson, president of the University of South Carolina; Clifford Kuhn, of the University of Louisville Medical School; Georges Benjamin, executive director and Chief Executive Officer of the American Public Health Association; and Lee Todd, president of the University of Kentucky. Colien Hefferan, CSREES Administrator, and Anna-Mae Kobbe, retired director of
Nutrition and Family Sciences, participated.
2005 National Priester Extension Health Conference
The 2005 National Priester Extension Health Conference was held April 12-15, in Lexington , KY. The theme for the 2005 Priester Conference was “Translating Research into Policy and Practice for Healthier Communities.” Workshops, presentations, roundtable discussions, and poster sessions highlighted programs and research developed and implemented by cooperative Extension professionals and their federal, state, and local partners. These programs educate community members about preventive care, risky health behavior avoidance, and positive health behaviors to prevent and/or manage chronic illnesses. They also educate about community health infrastructure, health care access and quality, and health care literacy.
