NIFA Human Nutrition and Obesity-Related Grant Programs
Research, extension and education projects involving subject matter similar to that targeted by the Kellogg Food and Fitness grants, are conducted or sponsored by state agricultural experiment stations, land-grant universities, other cooperating state institutions, and USDA research agencies, including NIFA.
NIFA-funded projects may involve competitive grants or Hatch formula grants. In particular, the competitive National Research Initiative (NRI) Human Nutrition and Obesity grant program is crosscutting and addresses the complex problem of obesity prevention. Projects are intended to lead to a better understanding of the behavioral and environmental factors that influence obesity and the development and evaluation of effective interventions to prevent obesity.
Information about NIFA-funded and other projects is accessible via the Current Research Information System (CRIS) database. CRIS is the USDA’s documentation and reporting system for ongoing and recently completed research and education projects in agriculture, food and nutrition, and forestry.
Projects specifically related to obesity and weight control in CRIS can be accessed through a custom search page. It lists project titles, years of study, investigators and institutions and links to summary or full descriptions of the projects. These projects may include behavioral and environmental factors that influence obesity, food insecurity and childhood obesity, food access and consumption, and food access and healthy eating.
