Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program 35th Anniversary
On March 2, 2004, CSREES, along with the Council on Agricultural Research Extension and Teaching (CARET), and National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), held a special event celebrating 35 Years of Excellence of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP). Twenty-four individuals from 18 states were honored for their exceptional achievements at an awards ceremony, followed by a reception in the Dirksen Senate Office Building on Capitol Hill.
More than over 300 individuals attended, including congressional members and their staff, members of CARET, NASULGC, state extension directors, university deans and staff, CSREES staff, and members of other federal agencies and organizations. The Honorees represented past adult and youth participants, paraprofessionals and volunteers who teach the lessons, professionals who provide leadership, and champions of the program. All the winners reflected great pride in their achievements and genuine appreciation for the remarkable impact EFNEP has had on their lives, and the impact they have made in the lives of others.
Three-time Olympian gold medalist and former EFNEP participant Jackie Joyner-Kersee congratulated the honorees via video from her hometown of East St. Louis, IL.
