My Community, Our Earth
(MyCOE) Project
The My Community, Our Earth Project:
Geographic Learning for Sustainable Development
(MyCOE) project is a partnership among
the National Geographic Society, the Association
of American Geographers, the United Nations
Environment Program, the ESRI Co., CSREES,
and others to encourage secondary school
and university students to use geographic
analysis tools to address community changes
and sustainability.
Using MyCOE, students create projects using
geographical tools and methods to document
community changes and illustrate how citizens
in their neighborhoods, villages, cities,
and countries can improve quality of life
and conserve natural resources. Students
can examine and learn more about environmental
issues, determine patterns and trends, and
propose solutions to the challenges they
study.
A selection of MyCOE-related projects is
displayed at international venues where decisionmakers
and professionals involved in sustainable
development can view the solutions developed
by the students.
Those with expertise in sustainable development,
geography, or geographic information systems
(GIS) are invited to register on the MyCOE
Web site as mentors to students working
on projects within their country.
