1890 Facilities Grant
Program
Purpose
The 1890
Facilities Grant Program provides funds for the acquisition
and improvement of food sciences facilities and equipment,
including libraries. Grants enable 1890 land-grant institutions
to participate fully in addressing research, extension,
and academic needs. The program was authorized by the National
Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching Policy Act
of 1977.
Eligibility
Only 1890 land-grant institutions are eligible to receive
funds through this program.
Awards
Federal funds are the primary support for the enhanced teaching,
research, and teaching facilities at the 18 universities.
Funding is provided on a formula basis. Furthermore, within
each institution, the research, extension, and teaching programs
must each receive at least 20 percent of the annual allocation.
The remaining 40 percent may be allocated based on institutional
needs for research, extension, or teaching; however, no more
than 60 percent of the total allocation should be directed
to research, extension, or teaching.
Funding
The funding for Fiscal Year 2006 is estimated at $16,777,000.
Results and Impacts
Program funds are used for the construction of new and renovated
structures and the purchase of land and equipment to assist
the institutions in improving their capacity to better address
the needs of their students, farmers, and rural and urban
populations with limited resources. Funds have been used
to develop research office complexes, extension office and
communication complexes, research laboratories, and to acquire
needed equipment to carry out teaching, research, and outreach
programs. See a report of impacts for this program.
