Business Retention and
Expansion Consultant Online Course
The University of Minnesota Extension Service
(UMES) is offering the Business
Retention and Expansion (BR&E) Consultant
Online Course this spring. Sometimes
called the Community Leaders or Volunteer
Visitation BR&E model, UMES has offered
this course since 1998 and continues to receive
strong participant evaluations. Previous
participants have gone on to create award-winning
BR&E programs.
The course starts March 6 and has a registration
deadline of February 24. The 10-week, online
active learning course presents a unique
opportunity to learn BR&E visitation
practices in depth by taking one unit at
a time. Participants will conduct a real
business visit, read and write, conduct e-mail
discussions with fellow participants and
the instructor, and discuss case studies.
Between 40 and 80 percent of all new job
creation comes from existing business establishments.
The UMES Business Retention and Expansion
Strategies Program works with existing businesses
and a cross-section of community leaders
to build consensus for a community-wide strategic
action plan. It's a great model for those
who want to put the community into their
economic development.
