Unwanted Horse Issue: What Now?

A forum called Unwanted Horse Issue: What Now? was held on June 18, 2008 in Washington, DC. Its purpose was to identify the current circumstances surrounding “unwanted” horses: whether there are such horses; if there are, how many; the causes of their abandonment; and possible solutions to the problem, including ways to deal with them before become unwanted.

CSREES and the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service led the organization of the event. Other members of the organizing committee were the American Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Horse Council, Unwanted Horse Coalition, and American Horse Protection Council. The American Humane Association Certified program sponsored the coffee break.
