Animals
Reducing infertility in agriculturally important
females, including aquatic species, is of
major importance for efficient animal production.
In dairy cattle and poultry, fertility of
females has declined significantly for several
decades. More knowledge is needed to improve
fertility and facilitate implementation of
integrated animal production systems that
will contribute to sustainability of the
animal production unit. This information
will control or reduce animal production
costs, provide product cost benefits to consumers,
and may ultimately lead to increased productivity
from fewer animals, thereby conserving natural
resources and enhancing the environment.
In addition, approaches to foster and manage
animal reproduction are key to future application
of assisted reproductive technologies and
biotechnologies.
CSREES has supported a number of basic
and applied projects at the systems,
cellular, and molecular levels to enhance
fertility in breeding populations or to
develop monosex populations or sterile
