Poultry Handling and Transportation Quality Assurance (PHTQA) certification program
The inauguration of the Poultry Handling and Transportation Quality Assurance (PHTQA) certification program will occur in 2011, with several training sessions.
The PHTQA trains poultry transportation and catch crews in methods of biosecurity, disease recognition, emergency planning, and the safe and humane handling of birds before, during, and after transport. The certification involves transportation and handling of several species including day old poultry, breeders, pullets, spent fowl, broilers and turkeys. PHTQA is the first third party certification of this type to cover several poultry species.
A team of scientists from Penn State University, USDA, as well as industry specialists will conduct the training and certification.
NIFA-AFRI’s Avian Influenza Coordinated Agricultural Project (AICAP) initiated the development of this program along with support and participation from USDA-APHIS and industry experts.
As training sessions are scheduled, dates will be posted to the PHTQA Web site.
