National Animal Germplasm
Program
The National
Animal Germplasm Program (NAGP), managed
by the USDA's Agricultural Research Service,
is the nation's primary program for conservation
of genetic resources for the livestock,
poultry, and aquaculture industries. This
program was initiated in 1999. It is located
in the National Center for Genetic Resources
Preservation (NCGRP) in Fort Collins, CO.
CSREES has played a significant role in
the effort by assisting the structuring and
funding of various species committees. The
germplasm or tissue placed in the repository
is entered into the Animal Germplasm Resource
Information Network (GRIN) system, with varying
degrees of public access. NAGP functions
include preservation and research activities
that address conservation, characterization,
and use of U.S. genetic resources. The infrastructure
capacity exists to maintain long-term storage
of animal germplasm or tissue.
