eOrganic Established as a Community of Practice Within eXtension
Oregon State University, the University of Vermont, the University of Illinois, and the University of Minnesota in 2007 received NIFA funding through the Organic Research and Extension Initiative to develop a new Community of Practice for eXtension. The project team, “eOrganic: eXtension for Organic Agriculture,” includes nine land-grant scientists, directed by Alexandra Stone of Oregon State University. eXtension is a relatively new initiative, providing online resources developed jointly by researchers, educators, and extension workers from land-grant institutions across the United States. Within eXtension, professionals with expertise in a specific topic or subject matter area can join together to form a Community of Practice (COP). COPs are typically multi-institutional, multi-state, and multi-disciplinary and work to deliver the "best of the best" educational resources to the public. Material is research-based and has been reviewed by a number of experts to ensure accuracy and lack of bias. eOrganic is a new COP serving the needs of those interested in organic agriculture. In addition to information on general topics important to organic agriculture such as certification, eOrganic provides a wealth of information on organic dairy and organic vegetable farming systems.
