USDA National Organic Standards

The USDA National Organic Standards put in place in October 2002 govern food labeled “organic,” whether grown in the United States or other countries. The standards also guide CSREES-sponsored organic agriculture-related research.

The CSREES national program leader who directs the Integrated Organic Program must ensure that adherence to the National Organic Standards is written into the Request for Applicationss (RFAs) that guide grant applicants. Peer reviewers of applications from the Integrated Organic Program must take into consideration the National Organic Standards when assessing the quality of proposals. Recipients of grant awards must follow these standards when conducting organic research.
