What is RSS? |

While horticultural crops grow on only a fraction of U.S. agricultural lands, they represent nearly 40 percent of U.S. agricultural crop production. They diversify and enhance human diets and improve our living environment and personal well-being. CSREES, through federal funding and program leadership, sustains cutting-edge horticultural research, education, and extension at our partner colleges and universities.

• CSREES activities increase sales of horticultural products through programs that document impacts on human health and well-being and the environment.
• CSREES encourages appropriate land-grant university curricula to provide trained professionals for the expanding horticultural professions.
• CSREES facilitates transition from other crops to horticultural crops to sustain agricultural production in the interface between urban and rural communities.
• CSREES programs reduce production costs of horticultural products to maintain the U.S. competitive position in the global marketplace.
• A CSREES stakeholders' workshop on plant and pest biology elicited research, education, and extension priorities from scientific and commodity groups.
• Five southern states have formed a consortium to enhance the region's small fruit industry while serving the needs of county horticulture agents.

Partnerships

• CSREES partners with state land-grant universities through Multistate Research Funded (MRF) Projects.
• The Steering Committee for Lawns & Environment is a consortium of organizations, including CSREES, that provide advice on pesticide use and the environment.
• The National Invasive Species Council is an interdepartmental council that helps to coordinate federal activities regarding invasive species.
