NIFA Frequently Asked Questions - General

General | Applying for a Grant | Grant Management

What does NIFA do?

NIFA's mission is to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, and communities by supporting research, education, and extension program in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations. The most important tools for accomplishing this mission are various sources of funding and program leadership.

What issues or problems does NIFA funding and program leadership address?

NIFA funding and leadership seek to:

  • improve agricultural productivity;
  • create new products;
  • protect animal and plant health;
  • promote human nutrition and health;
  • strengthen children, youth, and families; and,
  • keep rural American communities vital.

Specifically, NIFA funding and program leadership span over 60 Programs arrayed among 13 National Emphasis Areas.

What kinds of funding opportunities does NIFA offer?

NIFA offers three types of funding opportunities: competitive grants, formula-funded grants, and special line-item grants. NIFA's funding opportunities are considered federal financial assistance. Consequently, all NIFA awards are governed by the appropriate federal and agency-specific regulations, such as OMB Circulars and the Code of Federal Regulations.

Do I qualify for one of your grants?

To explore grant eligibility, use the Eligibility Group component of our funding opportunity sort feature or consult individual request for applications.

Can NIFA help with consumer questions regarding things like gardening, lawn care, home canning, etc?

The best place to go with these kinds of questions is your nearest county or regional extension office, where staff are on hand to answer questions not only from consumers, but also from small business owners, and farmers/ranchers. These offices have educational materials and Web sites. Some offices may have prerecorded answers to the most commonly asked consumer questions available by phone.
