One Solution Search Tool Development Project Overview

This and associated Web site pages are related to CSREES' development of a customized search and query application, associated with the One Solution Initiative, for selecting and reporting on data from within agency databases. Databases include the AREERA Plan of Work (POW) and Annual Report of Accomplishments, the Current Research Information System (CRIS) and its successor CSREES Information System (CIS), and the Research, Education, and Economics Information System (REEIS). Updates to these Web posts will be made as they become available.

Related database schemas describing the CRIS and POW databases as of January 1, 2008 are available. Minor revisions may be made to resolve processing problems if necessary. POW also has an Annual Report database that closely mimics POW.

All data is a mixture of structured and text data within Oracle databases. CSREES makes use of Oracle Portal and Oracle Text. Application software is written using JAVA. Some reporting out is accomplished using Crystal Reports and Jasper. Open source is encouraged.

Database details:

  • The Current Research Information System (CRIS) reports the existence and annual progress of REE funded research projects. CRIS contains a combination of structured data and unstructured text blob fields.
  • The AREERA Plan of Work and Annual Report system (POW) includes program descriptions and progress reports limited to four legislatively prescribed lines of funding. POW includes descriptions and annual accomplishments for each subject program. POW is a database application containing a combination of structured data and unstructured text blob fields.
  • The Research, Education, and Economics Information System (REEIS) includes reports and facts from multiple CSREES and agriculture-related databases. Prospective contractors are encouraged to, on the REEIS Web site:
    • click About REEIS, More, and to "Browse by Subject" to observe the extent of REEIS;
    • select "Document Search" on the tool bar, and to then select "Concept Search" to observe the current text search.
