NIFA's mission is to advance knowledge for agriculture, the environment, human health and well-being, and communities by supporting research, education, and extension programs in the Land-Grant University System and other partner organizations.
Through its funding and other means, NIFA's work ultimately benefits millions of US consumers. However, NIFA is not a direct citizen-serving agency. For example:
NIFA indirectly benefits consumers through its support of the Cooperative Extension System and its thousands of local offices nationwide, They provide valuable information on subjects like lawn care, home canning, financial management, frost dates, soil testing, and weeds.
However, NIFA is not itself a source for such consumer information.
NIFA funds hundreds of millions of dollars in research grants each year. They tackle subjects like animal diseases, food safety, air quality, and rural development, to name a few.
However, most all grants require that applicants be officially affiliated with an educational institution. Also, NIFA does not accept unsolicited requests for financial assistance.
NIFA funds support education programs throughout the country, including large state universities and smaller institutions serving African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans.
However, that support is directed at educational institutions, not directly to students in the form of student loans.
